Arts in K-12 Education

EDUC 401 Y

Time: Mondays, 3:00-4:20 pm

Start Date: 4/8

Location: SAV 162

How does learning take place in the arts? What are the existing and possible roles for arts education in schools and community settings? Which instructional practices help create quality arts learning experiences for students? How is learning in the arts assessed? What barriers to arts learning are faced by low-income or otherwise marginalized students, and how are these barriers overcome? How can the arts promote social justice? Students will engage all of these questions through weekly seminar discussions, readings, and reflective writing. All students will volunteer in an arts classroom in a school or community setting and will have an opportunity to share their teaching experiences, engage in group reflection on teaching practice, and learn from peer educators during the seminar sessions.
