Each of us has a role to play in ending educational inequity in our country. This class is geared for students that are interested in exploring Teach For America as an alternative teaching certification program. Students will volunteer in a school that serves a population in which the majority of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. In the weekly seminar, students will engage in values and competency based development to (1) commit to and pursue educational equity for students and communities utilizing a multifaceted, community-centered and culturally-responsive approach; (2) self-identify and articulate the personal values and assets that inspire leadership, as well as the individual identity and background that shape leadership; (3) recognize the central role of students, families, teachers, school leaders, community advocates and stakeholders in our work; and (4) access the foundational resources and relationships utilized by great teachers in preparation to create an inclusive, student-centered, community-centered, rigorous, relevant and responsive classrooms.
